Book Review: The Silent Corner (Dean Koontz)

Dean Koontz still has it, people. The man can write a tale that leaves readers begging for the next book. He had it 30 years ago, when I read my first Koontz book, and he still has it today.

The Silent Corner is one of those storylines that grabs you from the get-go and never lets go. Jane Hawk is one of the strongest female characters I’ve read in a long time. The story line is fascinating. The suspense is totally gripping. The writing is…well, this is Dean Koontz, after all. The writing is phenomenal.

I won’t rehash the story line, which is available everywhere the book sells. Just know this: There’s absolutely nothing to criticize about The Silent Corner. Some say Koontz’s style changed over the years, and it probably did. We all change with time, and as we change, so does our way of communicating. I loved this author through every ‘change,’ because one thing remained unchanging throughout the years: Dean Koontz can write. He can tell a story better than all but a couple of other authors that I’m aware of, and he holds his own even with them. His stories never disappoint, and The Silent Corner certainly doesn’t. I was glued to the pages from start to finish.

Unpredictable. Unforgettable. Fascinating. Thought-provoking. Endless heart-pounding excitement. Yes, it’s really that good.

Off to read The Whispering Room. Another Jane Hawk story? I’m already there!

Review: Spring Raine

Reviews are starting to come in for my novel, SPRING RAINE (Book 1, Paradise Pines). I'm so excited about this one, from Readers' Favorite! (Release date for Spring Raine is Feb. 24th.)

Spring RaineSpring Raine by Delia Latham
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Reviewed By Deborah Stone for Readers’ Favorite

Spring Raine (Paradise Pines Series) by Delia Latham is a powerful Christian romance that delivers a whole lot more than romance; it offers wisdom and encouragement throughout. The growing affection between Raine and Declan is touching and tender and is a well designed plot that weaves God's love and truth throughout each situation. Raine is the adult child of controlling parents who have a "plan" for her life. Before she begins the career and life that her parents have chosen for her, Raine treats herself to a three-month vacation at Paradise Pines. A time to relax and enjoy life before she settles into her hectic, all consuming career. Raine finds herself surrounded by nature, peace and unconditional love - all new and inviting.

As Raine enjoys the freedom to make her own choices, she begins to discover who she is and what she wants. A romance with Declan Keller seems like a waste of time since she is only here for the season, but God may have something else in mind. Raine develops friendships with people she has met and she has found a new relationship with God, a personal and real relationship that she never knew could exist. As many curious things happen around her, almost supernatural things, and her eyes are opened to new possibilities, Raine gains a new perspective and now she must make some hard choices.

Delia Latham tells a tender and endearing love story, but this book is so much more than romance. Delia Latham's characters are complex, multi-dimensional and well developed. Raine comes to Paradise Pines to relax and finds a whole different way of life. She finds freedom within herself and with her God. Delia Latham has a gift of descriptive writing that sets you right in the middle of what is happening and makes you feel as if you are a part of it all. "There is no place more joyful or peaceful than where our heavenly Father is, and no arms more loving or tender than His." As the reader experiences the beauty and wonder of the story, you cannot help but be both blessed and moved. Delia Latham has a way of entertaining, teaching and blessing you all at the same time.

Christmas Extravaganza: Bella Natale!: A Florentine Christmas Romance

by Marianne Evans

When the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true…

Ashley Coratini is bucking her family, and the odds, by embracing the chance to pursue a dream. During a three-week trip to Florence, Italy, she’s determined to immerse herself in the world of art and to explore the gifts God has given her.

Widower Luca DeRosa owns and operates a premiere art gallery at the heart of Florence. He’s just over a year away from turning forty, but doesn’t mind the milestone. He enjoys a life spent raising his five-year-old son and scouting artistic talent. When he comes upon Ashley, he’s captivated by her artistic skills and fluid grace, and he sees to it that Ashley’s dreams take off at high velocity.

But as love blooms, questions mount. Will Ashley embrace her gifts and a life in Italy that’s worlds different than the one waiting at home in America? Can Luca trust his heart and instincts enough to embrace the love of a vibrant young woman whose spirit speaks to him so deeply?

What comes next when the dreams they dare to dream really might come true…?

Review

A young woman, alone in Italy. An older man, suave and charismatic, with promises that seem too good to be true. All the earmarks of danger…and all the expectation and excitement of love and a beautiful future.

Charcoal artist Ashley Coratini made a promise to her beloved grandmother. That’s why, despite a myriad of questions, doubts and uncertainties, she makes a gigantic leap of faith and hope when a handsome stranger offers to take her and her drawings of the city of Florence to a level of success she’s only ever dreamed of achieving. Those dreams were part of the promise she made to her grandmother. She has this one chance to make them a reality.

The lightning-quick sweep of feelings between the hero and heroine in this novella is lovely—and exciting—as are the glimpses of Florence the author shares in vivid, beautifully portrayed detail. Bella Natale is a sweet, heart-stopping romance with additional touches of beauty provided by the historic and picturesque setting. Florence is as much a character as are the people who make up the “cast.”

Marianne Evans loses none of her signature style of smooth writing full of deep emotion and vivid personality, woven throughout with subtle strokes of incredible spiritual wisdom. Bella Natale may well be my favorite of this author’s works to date.

Mini-interview

What inspired you to write BELLA NATALE?

I wrote Bella Natale following a trip my DH and I took to Italy. We began our voyage in Rome, which took my breath away. After that, we headed north, to Florence. We intended to take a day-trip to Venice via train the following morning, but once we hit Florence, we literally looked at each other and without even speaking a word, we knew we were going to stay put in Florence and savor. It’s ancient, and gorgeous, and compact enough for wonderful walks and eating, and meandering along the Arno River, or going still before dazzling window displays, or listening to church bells sing out at noon across the city. The history is so rich and so ever-present that you can’t help but stop every few feet and absorb. It was truly the trip of a lifetime and I wanted to commemorate a slice of that journey for readers.

What smell do you love most, and why?

It’s a dead-heat tie between two: Freshly-buttered, stove-top prepared popcorn and the aroma of my family recipe onion bread baking in the oven. Both are heavenly!

Do you usually insert a spiritual theme into your books? If so, do you have a favorite?

A good number of my books center on the theme of redemption, and the return of the prodigal. I haven’t done so by design—it’s all God’s handiwork, which means there must be a reason for it! I do love a good reclamation story, don’t you?

Christmas Extravaganza: The Widow's Captive

by Lucette Nel

About THE WIDOW'S CAPTIVE:

On the run with two small children and a third due within weeks, Adeline Spencer fears the approaching blizzard will seal their fate. An abandoned cabin is an answer to her prayers. She hopes it will shield them from both the storm and the enraged brother-in-law hot on her tail. But when a stranger knocks at the door, she is convinced they have been found by one of Ward’s lackeys.

Blamed for the death of his friend, Sheriff Jonah Hale is determined to prove himself worthy of his badge, even if it means riding into a blizzard to check on a crazy miner. When Jonah reaches the cabin, he’s caught off guard by a pretty and very pregnant young woman wielding a skillet. Bound to a chair while the storm rages, and as Christmas settles in around them, he must find a way to earn Adeline’s trust…and perhaps her heart.

About Lucette:

Lucy Nel is a coffee addicted work-in-progress daughter of the Lord Almighty. She's a mommy to a rambunctious toddler and wife to her best friend and real-life hero. Along with three spoiled Pugs, they make their home in Gauteng, the smallest of nine provinces in South Africa.

During the day, she's a bookkeeper. At night when the world sleeps, she delves into her passion, creating interesting characters in historical settings.

She's a member of American Christian Fiction and her dream came true when she recently signed a contract with Pelican Book Group for her Christmas themed novella, The Widow's Captive.

One of her favorite quotes about writing is by C.S. Lewis: You can make anything by writing.

Her favorite verse is Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Review:

First page to last, this story is a wonderful, exhilarating, fast and furious ride…I loved it! Sheriff Jonah—brave, kind and considerate, handsome and sometimes downright huggable—is the picture-perfect hero. Adeline and her adorable kiddies grab the heartstrings right from the get-go, despite their less-than-welcoming first-time encounter with the hunky lawman. Throw in a snowed-in cabin, a baby in a hurry to be born, and a bad guy with a gun and a mean streak, and…well, what’s not to love? THE WIDOW’S CAPTIVE…captivates. Absolutely recommended for readers who love a good cowboy tale, a nice Christian romance, a chunk of charm and a peck of pizzazz.

Mini-interview:

Which character in THE WIDOW'S CAPTIVE did you most enjoy writing? Why?

Ethan! I love the little dude desperately trying to be a man, while he’s still just a little boy.

What smell do you love most, and why?

Petrichor. (I didn’t know there was a word to describe the smell until I recently saw a post on Facebook.) It’s that scent you get when rain falls on dry soil. I love it; it signifies a fresh and new start.

Please share a verse of scripture that is especially meaningful to you, and why it is special.

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV))—I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

I lost my mother as a teen. All of the sudden up felt down and right felt left. This verse helped me cope with grieving and many other challenges I’ve faced since then.

Book Review: Swept Away (Mary Conneally)

Series: Trouble in Texas, Book 1

Luke Stone is on his way to get his family’s ranch back from the thieving scoundrel who took it over after killing Luke’s pa. Before he reaches his destination, however, he finds a woman. She’s water-logged and bedraggled, sunburned and freckled, red-haired and bossy, and absolutely the busiest woman Luke has ever laid eyes on.

Ruthie MacNeil is glad to have survived the flash flood that killed her abusive “family.” She’s grateful to have been rescued by the handsome, hard-headed stranger, and only too happy to be whisked away and thrust into a new life--jam-packed with danger and excitement though it definitely is.

With the help of Luke’s four loyal friends, they set about reclaiming the Stone ranch, rescuing a beautiful battered wife, and falling…well, sort of scrabbling and furiously back pedaling…in love. Mary Connealy delivers a great story line and, as always, a wagonload of belly laughs. Delightful!

Santa Fe Sunrise (Tanya Stowe)

Beautiful imagery, unforgettable characters, and a riveting storyline!

Tanya Stowe always strikes me as a one-of-a-kind writer…but never so much as when she writes suspense. Her genuine love for the genre shines through in the extra ‘heaping heartful’ of edginess she doles out for her suspense readers. In SANTA FE SUNRISE, that little something extra adds up to pure magic.
Rafaela De Silva’s got a lot on her lovely Native American plate—not the least of which is the steady financial decline of her family’s art gallery. Then there’s the delicate younger sister who lays claim to a severe eating disorder, a super-sized artistic talent and ever-increasing night terrors that could easily land her in a room with fancy bars on the windows. Add to that the fact that the handsome stranger in town thinks someone wants to harm Rafaela, and the woman’s got more than sufficient reason to be a little on edge.
Brett is determined to find out who wants to hurt the woman who’s taken an unrelenting grip on his heart—even though that woman can’t decide whether to trust him or chase him out of town. While he quietly delves into why someone might want Rafaela out of the picture, Brett also sets out to bring a little joy back into the home she shares with her mother and sister. While he’s repairing a ramshackle villa, he’s also rebuilding his self-worth, mending his relationship with God…and making himself a bigger target for someone who will stop at nothing to get what the De Silva family don’t even know they have.
Stowe knows suspense, and handles it with all the aplomb of the seasoned professional she is. She also knows romance, and doesn’t mind turning Brett and Rafaela upside down and inside out while exploring the whole boy-gets-girl scenario. Her recipe for romantic suspense results in an extra bit of pizzazz in both categories.

A dash of ancient Indian legend. A generous helping of black market artifacts. A pinch of snark, a handful of hope—and chapter after chapter of top-notch writing. I can’t imagine any reader of romance and/or suspense not being utterly and completely captivated by Santa Fe Sunrise. Five GREAT BIG stars!

Eve (Wm. Paul Young)

Captivating. A little confusing, at times, but not enough to lose the reader. Nothing like The Shack, and yet...there are strains and shadows of "sameness" that make it wonderful. I loved it!

Beguiling (Nolan Carlson)

If you're looking for a good book for your teens to read, just in time for Halloween and all the "scary" stuff, you've found it! I'm certainly not a teen, but I enjoyed the story line immensely. Good writer!

Falling for Her (Debbie Macomber)

(Short Story)

Debbie Macomber doesn't know how to write badly. I don't like to rate a story this short, as it doesn't provide the author enough leeway to fully depict the characters. But the author did a great job, and left me wanting to read the rest of the series. That says plenty.

Designed by Love, Mary Manners

HEART'S HAVEN SERIES, Book 11

This may well be my favorite of this author's Heart's Haven offerings, to date. I love them all, but Traci and Dylan captured my heart - and I love the way the ever-present Heart's Haven angels did their "thing" in this book. Just perfectly perfect!

Whispers on the Prairie (Vickie McDonough)

PIONEER PROMISES SERIES, Book 1

Well, Vickie McDonough does it again. Whispers on the Prairie is a beautifully written tale filled with heart-tugging emotion and a terrific story line that is the perfect first book in a series. I love the Harper family, and can't wait to watch the other two brothers fall in love. Ethan's angst over failing to keep his older brother's flighty wife from getting herself killed, and Sarah's love for the sweet aunt who gave her a home are key elements in this touching story. It's a series of tragic, funny, moving events as all three Harper brothers make a play for the pretty "city gal" who is forced to accept their family's hospitality, though she knows nothing of prairie life. Vickie McDonough consistently writes fiction that resonates, and Whispers on the Prairie is yet another example of that skill. Just a delightful read!
